| I was rolling around the internet right I stumble across a game called Cosmic Break. - Quote :
- Cosmic Break is very reminiscent to the Armored Core series and it’s MMO counterpart eXteel. Both video games focus on complex robot customization and PvP combat. Cosmic Break is no different when it comes to these aspects. What sets it apart from the other two is not only it’s super-deformed cutesy tone, but also its emphasis on class-based gameplay.
Getting in-tune with Cosmic Break
Cosmic Break is divided into different types of game modes. Players may choose to complete missions with other players to earn experience points and “UC,” the currency of Cosmic Break. They can also participate in Quests to search for rare items, or enter the Arena and try to eliminate the enemy faction in a 60 player PvP Union war.
When it comes to the actual combat, fighting and maneuvering is entirely reliant on how you customized your robot. There are 4 different classes to specialize on – air, land, artillery, and support – and it’s possible to mix and match these to form a jack of all trades. But that would also mean your robot is a master of none as Cosmic Break rewards players for focusing on a specific class, through class-specific parts and better attributes.
Much like Team Fortress 2 and almost every class-based multiplayer game in existence, each type of robot has its own weakness. A robot that’s built for flight will have an easy time picking on land-based robots who’s forte are close-range combat. But will have a hard time dealing with robots packed with massive artillery, as aerial-robots suffer more damage when hit by an explosion.
These classes don’t mean much when participating in Quests or Missions though. The Quests in particular usually deteriorate into an every-player-for-himself kind of match. I often found myself alone, fending off the massive onslaught of enemy robots by myself, while each of my comrades do the same, but in different portions of the map.
When I did find a competent group to Quest with, we were immediately separated because one team member took the wrong colored gate, which took that player to a different area. We were down to three after that happened.
You see, when Questing, Players must search for specific treasures to complete a Quest. These quests are divided into different areas instead of one big seamless map. To progress, players must search for color-coded keys that will allow them access to specific gates – there’s usually two in each area. Color-coded because a blue key gives access to an easier area to fight on, while the red key opens the gates to a much more difficult area. So in almost every map there two paths to progress to.
Unfortunately, Cosmic Break does nothing to keep my party from getting separated until we reach the next outpost – think of it as an area for players to take a breather before continuing the Quest. Then again, keeping players apart because of a lack of coordination does raise the tension a bit since I’m left wondering if that player will make it to the outpost in tact… or quit the Quest entirely. The latter is usually the case when I Quest with strangers.
PvP matches on the other hand are nothing short of epic. It is in this mode where the specialties of each class are realized. Being part of the lower tier robots, I usually stick to the skies and aid my teammates from above. Doing so also gives me a spectacular view of the battlefield. Land robots dash within enemy lines, causing confusion, while taking down unsuspecting robots. Above them are the air brigade raining down additional support. Way back are the artillery, bombarding the enemy with all sorts of weaponry that’s no stranger to massive explosions. Further back is the support robot, which acts like a medic for robots who are a few health points away from being scrap metal.
It’s this unconsciously laid-out plan that makes Cosmic Break not only a joy to play, but to watch as well. Such scenario isn’t always the case though. A team could lack artillery or support robots, causing the battle to end faster than expected. But when everything falls into place, when all the right units are accounted for before battle, this is where Cosmic Break rivals even the most popular video game title when it comes to providing a very satisfying multiplayer experience.
